Jeffrey Gorrell’s Story

As a cardiac nurse, Jeff Gorrell knows a lot about sleep apnea. It’s common among his patients. And he also knows how serious it can be. Untreated sleep apnea can cause atrial fibrillation (AFib), increase stroke risk and shorten life expectancy. What Jeff didn’t know was that though he was young, slim and didn’t snore, sleep apnea was robbing him of his best life.

Nobody has a plan prior to being diagnosed with cancer. It’s usually the farthest thing from anyone’s mind. But thanks to donor support of cancer services in Greater Toledo, Kristin Baldeschwiler was able to receive specialized cancer care from the health care provider she knows and trusts.

Charlotte Threlkeld’s Story

Charlotte Threlkeld lived with excruciating back pain for years. It was caused by spinal stenosis. At one point, the pain was so severe she needed a wheelchair just to get around. When her surgeon at Mercy Health — Lourdes Hospital recommended a complex back procedure, she braced herself for a long, painful recovery.

Carol McCoy’s Story

It was a routine annual mammogram for Carol McCoy. Until the results came back with a cancer diagnosis. Then it wasn’t routine at all. Carol was facing a stressful diagnosis with treatment options including surgery, chemotherapy and radiation. Thanks to donor support, Carol had a sense of calm. Their gifts to the Karen Teusink Integrated Breast Center at the Mercy Health — Springfield Regional Cancer Center meant Carol had a place that was dedicated to her care.

Linda Powel’s Story

Undergoing cancer treatment is hard enough. For patients who lose their hair because of it, it can be even more difficult to keep spirits up. Thanks to donor generosity, Linda Powel was able to receive a wig and makeup tips to help her manage through her difficult illness.

When Andrew Bajda’s mother was in hospice care, Pastor John Jackson sang “You Are My Sunshine.” The sweet melody put a smile on his mother’s face and soothed Andrew’s soul. When Jeff Hix experienced intense abdominal pain and vomiting last June, he immediately feared the worst. He has experienced a small bowel obstruction before. Despite being in significant discomfort, he drove himself to the Mercy Health — Marcum and Wallace Hospital emergency department.

Mary’s Story

Mary Wright was scared. Her 94-year-old mother, Jean, had a serious eye infection that suddenly got worse. With Jean’s health already fragile from vascular dementia, Mary knew they needed help. And fast. Because of donor support, the emergency team at Kings Mills was ready.
