St. Luke’s Foundation merger

After McLaren announced the closure of St. Luke’s facilities in Maumee, Ohio, in 2023, Mercy Health agreed to purchase the physical assets and offer employment to St. Luke’s medical providers and staff. The move also left St. Luke’s Foundation with assets from donations that had been given to support health care needs in the hospital’s five-county service area.

“We were seeking a partner that would honor the 45-year heritage of St. Luke’s Foundation and keep the wishes and values of our donors at the forefront,” says Rhonda Wise, former St. Luke’s Foundation board chair. “We're confident that Mercy Health Foundation will carry forth our legacy by investing our donors’ generosity in the well-being of residents across St. Luke’s service area.”

As part of the merger, which was approved by Ohio Attorney General and Lucas County Probate Court, the Mercy Health Foundation created a St. Luke’s Hospital Legacy Fund for existing and new donations. The fund exclusively earmarks donations to boost health and wellness services within the region of Lucas, Wood, Fulton, Henry and Defiance counties that had been the former hospital’s service area.

“We are excited to carry on St. Luke’s legacy, honor donors’ intent for their gifts, and also to welcome members of their foundation board into the Mercy Health Foundation family,” says Tim Koder, president, Bon Secours Mercy Health Foundation.

Donations to the St. Luke’s Hospital Legacy Fund ensure top-quality patient care and outreach efforts continue to be provided to residents of communities near the former hospital. Charitable giving provides education and training for both care providers and community members. And gifts from donors assist with refreshing and modernizing medical facilities, including technological advancements.
