Mercy Health – Youngstown, OH

Thanks to you, Dr. Reyles is ready to serve

Thanks to you, the Internal Medicine Residency Program at Mercy Health — St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital is shaping the future of health care in the Mahoning Valley, one young physician at a time. For Dr. John Vincent Reyles, now a second-year resident, the program has been nothing short of transformative.

“As residents, we’re encouraged to carry a never-ending wonder of medicine,” he says. “That curiosity, that drive to learn and serve, is built into the culture here.”

Dr. Reyles describes the program as both a training ground and a safety net. Residents learn medicine at its most real and most human level. They care for a diverse community where many patients face financial barriers, complex social needs and limited access to care.

“We take care of people who might not be able to go anywhere else,” he explains. “We’re trained not just to treat disease. We coordinate resources, address social factors and make sure patients are supported long after they leave the hospital.”

According to Dr. Reyles, the faculty’s deep commitment to each resident’s growth sets the program apart.

“Our learnings are hands-on, intentional and truly resident-centered,” he says. “They’re focused on preparing us to become confident, independent physicians who can serve any community well.”

Your generosity is an investment with a long-lasting impact. Program graduates report feeling ready for both complex cases and the day-to-day realities of frontline care.

“You’re not just supporting a residency program,” Dr. Reyles says. “You’re investing in good doctors who stay, who serve and who give back. You’re strengthening the health of an entire community.”
