John makes it to all his cancer appointments, thanks to you
John Page worked his whole construction career in the scorching south Florida sun. He knows all too well the damage sun exposure can cause. And while he likely has that to blame for his recent skin cancer diagnosis, he has you to thank for helping him get on the road to recovery.
A neighbor told John about Mercy Express, the van service you support with your gift to the Mercy Health Foundation Greater Lima. Because of your support, he makes it to every one of his radiation therapy appointments at Mercy Health — Allison Radiation Oncology.
“If it wasn’t for Mercy Express, I wouldn’t be able to get to my cancer treatments,” he says. “I’d be lost because I don’t drive. I have no way of getting around.”
Before learning about Mercy Express, John would rely on local taxi services if he ever needed to go somewhere. It didn’t matter if it was a medical appointment or a trip to the store. But that soon became a financial burden, particularly when his treatment regimen called for 23 appointments to tackle each cancerous skin lesion.
“With me being retired, that would eat me up,” he says. “They finished this one on my shoulder and now I’ve got this other one just starting. That’s another 23 sessions.”
John says his care team “does marvels.” He knows it would be a terrible shame to miss out on their expertise and compassionate care because of a ride. He hopes more people in similar circumstances learn about Mercy Express. And he’s grateful to you for making it available to him.
“They’re lifesavers to me,” he says. “That’s how I see it. That’s the way it is.”
