Make an Impact

Ensure a healthier community for everyone

Good health starts at home and healthy residents make our community better

Our wellness programs and community health services help every person access the resources to live a healthier life

A healthy community depends on many resources coming together, including access to quality health care, functional and affordable housing, education, employment, public safety, and recreational and cultural opportunities. Inspired by our Catholic roots that teach us each person is sacred, Bon Secours is playing a lead role in our communities to address the priorities that improve people's health and quality of life.

When you donate to our Community Health fund, you meet the community's needs for a range of health and wellness services beyond the walls of Bon Secours facilities. With your help, neighborhoods across the Richmond area will have more resources for important preventative care, health screenings and wellness services.

Whether you give to the Community Health fund or to a specific program, you help people access care and support when and where it's most convenient for them. And often free of charge for those without insurance or the ability to pay.

We depend on donations for these important programs that help people make healthier choices and prioritize their good health, improving the well-being of our entire Richmond community.

Care-A-Van Mobile Clinic

Uninsured adults and children in the Greater Richmond area have a free and convenient option for medical care at the Bon Secours Care-A-Van. This donor-funded mobile clinic provides primary care, urgent care and preventative care services, including immunizations, treatment for chronic illnesses and even social work support.

It takes hundreds of thousands of dollars to operate the Care-A-Van and to provide more than 24,000 patient visits each year. Your donation means everyone can get the high quality health care they need, near their own neighborhood.

The Care-A-Van also provides medical care for asthma, family planning, sports physicals, children’s health insurance enrollment, and health education services. The Care-A-Van team is bilingual (Spanish/English) and composed of physicians, nurse practitioners, registered nurses, patient care technicians, licensed practical nurses, drivers, registrars, trained medical interpreters, registered dieticians and outreach workers.

Sarah Garland Jones Center for Healthy Communities

A vacant gas station found new life as a vibrant hub for community activity in Richmond's east end. The Sarah Garland Jones Center for Healthy Living has a learning kitchen for classes on healthy food preparation and kitchen safety. A multi-purpose community room hosts meetings, group therapy for various medical conditions and educational opportunities for all ages. The Front Porch Café is a neighborhood spot for coffee, live music and job training opportunities for local youth.

In the spirit of its namesake—the first African American woman licensed to practice medicine in Virginia and co-founder of the Richmond Community Hospital—the Center emphasizes equity within the community to break down barriers, build bonds and help residents of the neighborhood prioritize their good health.

Instructive Visiting Nurse Association (IVNA)

Our IVNA team is an important part of Bon Secours' home health services and community wellness resources. Our visiting nurses and home health staff can provide care that helps prevent patients from going into the hospital or emergency room again.

Each year IVNA nurses give over 20,000 vaccinations throughout Richmond and surrounding communities. And thanks to donors like you, adults and children can get immunizations and home health care regardless of their ability to pay.

Violence Response Team

Thanks to funding from donors like you, Bon Secours can offer a special resource known as the Violence Response Team, which includes both forensic nursing and victim advocacy support. Specialty-trained nurses are available 24 hours a day to care for sexual and physical abuse victims. The entire team helps vulnerable victims begin healing, and also plays a vital role in the justice systemA discreet unit provides victims with privacy for support and examinations.

Forensic nurses and victim advocates help patients of all ages when the unthinkable has happened, including sexual assault and human trafficking, child and elder abuse. They work with victims to build trust that has been broken by abuse. They collect evidence for investigations, including taking fluid and hair samples, photographing evidence and testifying in court cases. Our Violence Response Team also train other nurses across the region and provide community education to increase available support and expertise for victims of violence.
