Why I Give: I like to support others in my community

Martha McLean calls herself a “Portsmouth Person.” She knows it is important to take care of her community and her neighbors.

At 85 years old, she stays busy volunteering and helping others. She often runs errands and gets groceries for those who cannot get out on their own. She also makes regular donations to Bon Secours Hampton Roads Foundation. She directs her giving to support Bon Secours Maryview Hospital.

“I know the money I give is staying in our local area,” she says.

Martha is inspired by loved ones who have faced breast cancer. Because of them, she supports women’s health close to home.

“It means a lot to me that they opened a new mammogram center. They are even working on traveling mammograms to reach people who can’t get out to the facilities,” she says.

“I’m not a very important person, but I do what I can to help.”
