You provided Dulce a new way to recover from cancer surgery
As a nurse, Dulce Davis understood the importance of rehabilitation after cancer treatment. But even she struggled to regain her strength and mobility after surgery and a difficult recovery. When traditional physical therapy left her discouraged, your gift lifted her up.
“I felt beaten,” she says. “I was only 55, but I felt like my 81-year-old mother could outwalk me.”
Dulce experienced significant weakness and pain in her leg after treatment for Stage 4 cancer. Traditional physical therapy didn’t help after three weeks. That’s when her oncologist referred her to the Maple Tree Cancer Alliance exercise oncology program.
The donor-supported program is built around personalized virtual coaching sessions. Dulce worked one-on-one with a specialist who developed exercises tailored to her specific needs. She used an app with guided videos and tools to help her stay accountable between sessions. Within weeks, she noticed less pain, greater flexibility and improved mobility.
“The program gave me the resources, structure and encouragement I needed. It allowed me to take an active role in my own recovery,” she says.
Today, Dulce continues to move forward with hope while navigating life after cancer treatment. The exercise oncology program helped restore more than physical strength. It helped restore confidence, independence and quality of life.
“When donors support programs like this, they’re helping the helpers,” she says. “Because I’m stronger and more functional today, I’m able to continue serving others as a nurse, a friend and a member of my community.”
