Betty’s husband was loved and cared for, thanks to you
When Betty O’Donnell remembers the compassion, care and love her late husband Pat received as a patient at Bon Secours — St. Mary’s Hospital, there is still a song in her heart. Pat was diagnosed with an aggressive brain tumor at age 78. Thanks to your gift to support The Cullather Quality of Life Center, Pat found peace through music therapy.
For Betty, the challenges of caregiving were made easier when music therapist Stephanie Suber visited. She filled the room with songs they loved and melodies that brought comfort, connection and moments of peace. Stephanie’s clinical, evidence-based work helped Pat manage pain and reduce anxiety. It helped Betty as well.
Music therapy is just one of the integrative therapeutics you make possible. Patients can also experience massage therapy, acupuncture, yoga, meditation and art therapy.
“From the moment we walked in, I felt the love,” Betty says.
Upon learning his diagnosis, Pat made a courageous decision. Knowing treatment would not change his prognosis, he chose — together with his family — to focus on quality of life and time together.
“The Cullather Center is a wonderful place. They do so much for patients and the families,” Betty says. “Every person who cared for my husband showed him tremendous compassion and cared for me and our two sons as well.”
On the day Pat passed, Stephanie came one final time to sing. Though Pat was not awake, Betty believes her presence brought him peace. Stephanie later performed at Pat’s funeral — a reflection of the deep bond they shared.
