Carol McCoy’s Story

It was a routine annual mammogram for Carol McCoy. Until the results came back with a cancer diagnosis. Then it wasn’t routine at all. Carol was facing a stressful diagnosis with treatment options including surgery, chemotherapy and radiation. Thanks to donor support, Carol had a sense of calm. Their gifts to the Karen Teusink Integrated Breast Center at the Mercy Health — Springfield Regional Cancer Center meant Carol had a place that was dedicated to her care.

Charlotte Threlkeld’s Story

Charlotte Threlkeld lived with excruciating back pain for years. It was caused by spinal stenosis. At one point, the pain was so severe she needed a wheelchair just to get around. When her surgeon at Mercy Health — Lourdes Hospital recommended a complex back procedure, she braced herself for a long, painful recovery.

Linda Powel’s Story

Undergoing cancer treatment is hard enough. For patients who lose their hair because of it, it can be even more difficult to keep spirits up. Thanks to donor generosity, Linda Powel was able to receive a wig and makeup tips to help her manage through her difficult illness.

Meet Blake Summarell

Blake Summarell and his wife Taylor may only be in their 30s, but they’re already making a lasting impact. Blake is a donor to the Mercy Health Foundation Lourdes and Taylor is a nurse practitioner at Mercy Health — Midtown Pediatrics. Blake is inspired to give because of his wife.

As a working mom with two sons, Jocelyn Ruiz is not used to sitting still. Thanks to donors, she didn’t have to when she was in labor with her latest child, Elijanel.

Andrew Bajda’s Story

The hearts of the Bajda family were captured by a song. When Andrew Bajda’s mother was in hospice care, Pastor John Jackson sang “You Are My Sunshine.” The sweet melody put a smile on his mother’s face and soothed Andrew’s soul. It was all thanks to donor gifts to support pastoral and spiritual care services.

As a nurse at Mercy Health — Lorain Hospital, Mara Barnes spent her career caring for others. After retiring in 2022, she’s continued that mission by giving to the Mercy Health Foundation.

Jeff Hix’s Story

When Jeff Hix experienced intense abdominal pain and vomiting last June, he immediately feared the worst. He has experienced a small bowel obstruction before. Despite being in significant discomfort, he drove himself to the Mercy Health — Marcum and Wallace Hospital emergency department.
