Your support provided the rehabilitation tools Carl needed to live at home with his wife, Kathy
Kathy Schulz could see the toll several falls and multiple surgeries had on her husband Carl. She worried he might never get back to how he was before.
"After his second surgery, Carl was left like an infant. He couldn't feed himself. He couldn't walk. He couldn't even stand," she says.
Your gift to Mercy Health - St. Charles Hospital’s Acute Inpatient Rehabilitation provided Carl with access to the facilities and equipment he needed to recover from brain and spinal cord surgeries. Today, he's back living in his home with Kathy.
“They do a real good job there. They keep you going. I had physical and occupational rehab, which helped me regain my strength,” says Carl.
“Rehabilitation at Mercy is a Godsend for us. They did wonders with him. It's how I could bring him home.”
Kathy and Carl are grateful that your support turned into the tools and training Carl needed, especially a car simulator, which helps patients relearn how to safely get in and out of a vehicle. It falls on Kathy to drive Carl to his doctor appointments. She wouldn't be able to do that if not for the rehab that taught him how to get in and out of their car without falling.
“Rehab has helped Carl learn how to get in and out of a car, on and off the toilet and brush his teeth by himself,” Kathy says. “These are little things that become major milestones when your loved one can’t do them. He can do them now."
