Unity Park opens in Franklin Square

New Unity Park is making a splash in Franklin Square, thanks to Bon Secours Baltimore Foundation funders

A celebration on September 22 opened the West Baltimore park and splash pad, the latest neighborhood revitalization project led by Bon Secours Community Works

Four years after Bon Secours Community Works purchased a vacant lot from the City of Baltimore, 250 neighbors, dignitaries and staff gathered in Franklin Square for a ribbon cutting to open Unity Park. The community-designed "splash park" gives West Baltimore residents a safe place to gather, play and cool off during hot summer months.

A steering committee of community members helped Community Works leaders determine how to renovate the parcel of land to benefit the neighborhood. The idea for Unity Park was born. Unity Park is now open year-round from dawn to dusk, with its splash pad open from May to October. It has grills for cooking and playground equipment for non-water play.

Community members, local partners, political leaders, funders and staff attending the park's grand opening played in the splash zone and enjoyed good food, snowballs and arts and crafts. Bon Secours Community Works shared information about their programs and services.

Bon Secours Baltimore Foundation depends on support from donors and funders to ensure West Baltimore residents have access to life-improving resources, affordable housing and neighborhood enhancements that improve quality of life. Grants and donations designated to Bon Secours Community Works help do things like turn a vacant lot into a safe place where families can gather, play and get relief from the heat
