TYRO program helps prepare 25 incarcerated individuals for successful transition into society

Graduation ceremony celebrated August 2022 TYRO graduates who are participants of Bon Secours Community Works' Returning Citizens program

Thanks to donations and grants received by the Bon Secours Baltimore Foundation, 25 participants in the Returning Citizens program were able to complete weeks of the full TYRO curriculum to help prepare them for their upcoming release from incarceration and to successfully transition back into society. A graduation ceremony was held in August to celebrate the first cohort to complete the program at the Dorsey Run correctional facility in Jessup since the pandemic began. The Returning Citizens Program uses a highly successful evidence-based curriculum, called TYRO, which supports formerly incarcerated individuals with transitioning back into society. According to TYRO's website, the program equips participants with the character, relational and ethical foundations needed to break generational cycles of poverty, low expectations and incarceration. The classes help participants:

  • develop skills to achieve their highest potential
  • increase their emotional intelligence
  • improve their view of themselves and their relationships
  • own responsibility for their actions
  • prepare them to live a life of honor and integrity
