The Health Care Visionary Awards celebrate those who protect, heal and inspire
Every year, Mercy Health Foundation Mahoning Valley recognizes three local health care leaders
On Wednesday, April 2, Mercy Health Foundation Mahoning Valley hosted its 2025 Health Care Visionary Awards. The event took place at the DeYor Performing Arts Center in downtown Youngstown.
This year's awards celebrated three honorees who make a big impact on our community:
The Continuing the Legacy Award went to Mercy Health Youngstown Protective Services for excellence in police service. The Protective Services team is a true partner to Mercy Health. They keep patients, staff and visitors safe every day. They work with the Foundation to get safety tools, like patrol cars and training gear. Chief Ryan Bonacci has led this exemplary team for almost 10 years.
The Heart of the Mission Award went to the Joanie Abdu Comprehensive Breast Care Center (JACBCC) for its award-winning care. The JACBCC puts screening, diagnosis and specialized treatment all under one roof for patients. Named for Joanie Abdu, a caring nurse who passed from breast cancer, it's the only comprehensive breast care center in eastern Ohio. The Foundation's fund, Joanie's Promise, provides free screenings for women in need.
The Mahoning Valley Leadership in Health Award went to Dr. Carl R. Peterson III for his outstanding work in radiation oncology. Dr. Peterson has spent over a decade focusing on breast cancer and brain tumors. He's earned accolades from the American Cancer Society for his achievements. He lives in the area with his wife and four children.
The event also featured a keynote by The Most Reverend David J. Bonnar of the Diocese of Youngstown. Following the awards ceremony, guests enjoyed a social reception.
