Bon Secours – Richmond, VA

Mary Kay Rotert uses planned gifts to the Bon Secours Foundation to help others pursue nursing careers

A senior woman with short, brown hair sits in a pale green armchair inside. She's holding a framed portrait of herself at a younger age, in a nurse's uniform.

Mary Kay Rotert has always valued health care. It’s one of the reasons why she wanted to become a nurse practitioner. Becoming one, however, took some help.

“I come from a middle-class background. I had four little brothers, so there was no way that my parents could afford a college education,” she says. “I managed to find all kinds of scholarships, grants and fellowships that when cobbled all together, got me through school.”

“I want to make sure that other young men or women who are interested in the field of nursing have the financial means to get there.”

Mary Kay says that she has been able to lead a “very good life,” which inspired her to give back. She's done so through planned gifts to the Bon Secours Richmond Health Care Foundation, which support Rappahannock General Hospital and the Bon Secours Memorial College of Nursing.

“I want to make sure that other young men or women who are interested in the field of nursing have the financial means to get there. And I’ve been very impressed with the quality of care at our hospital.”
