Ensure the best cancer care is available for everyone
Carol is fighting cancer in a calming environment, thanks to donors
It was a routine annual mammogram for Carol McCoy. Until the results came back with a cancer diagnosis. Then it wasn’t routine at all.
Carol was facing a stressful diagnosis with treatment options including surgery, chemotherapy and radiation. Thanks to donor support, Carol had a sense of calm. Their gifts to the Karen Teusink Integrated Breast Center at the Mercy Health — Springfield Regional Cancer Center meant Carol had a place that was dedicated to her care.
“My experience there was so positive,” Carol says. “It was wonderful to be in such a relaxing and welcoming atmosphere.”
Carol describes a kind of home base for her cancer fight. She felt empowered knowing donors provide so many resources.
“My husband and I could meet with my nurse navigator, oncologist and radiologist all at once,” she says. “I felt like I had a whole team on my side collaborating to make sure I received the best care for my specific cancer.”
Carol wants donors to know how important their gifts are to her and other breast cancer patients.
“Your generosity created a space which helps ease the anxiety associated with a cancer diagnosis,” she says. “The thoughtful design of the Integrated Breast Center offers some peace during this uncertain and stressful time — especially at the beginning. It is nice to know there are people in our area who care enough to help create a softened environment to discuss the scariest news of your life.”
