Ensure the best cancer care is available for everyone

Mercy Health – Paducah, KY

Linda has the confidence to fight thanks to donors

Undergoing cancer treatment is hard enough. For patients who lose their hair because of it, it can be even more difficult to keep spirits up. Thanks to donor generosity, Linda Powel was able to receive a wig and makeup tips to help her manage through her difficult illness.

“My cancer medication was changed, and as result, my hair started falling out right across the front,” Linda says. “When it started happening, I panicked a little and thought ‘I have to do something!’”

The Look Good, Feel Better program at Mercy Health — Lourdes Hospital is supported by donors. Linda knew about it from a friend who had received a wig from the program during her cancer battle. The next time Linda went for blood tests, she asked about it.

“I was assigned a social worker who was so nice,” she says. “She signed me up and helped me pick out the wig. The color is a spot-on match and it’s fun to try out different styles. Everyone has been so complimentary. It’s worked out so well, I’ve ordered another one.”

In addition to the wig, the program helps patients learn to use makeup techniques to counter some of the effects of cancer and its treatment. Linda is very grateful for the help and individual attention the program has offered. She’s happy to be back to volunteering with the hospital auxiliary.

“It all just makes me feel better,” Linda says. “The program is really wonderful and I’m so glad there are people who support it.”
