Why I Give: I want to build a stronger and safer community
Being a servant leader is in Joyce Lanier’s blood. She was raised by parents who gave back to their community, and she has fulfilled that mission herself as a public school teacher.
Giving her time and donations to the Foundation aligns with her core beliefs. She is a steadfast supporter of the Violence Response Team (VRT). The VRT is a group of forensic nurses and victim services advocates available at Bon Secours Richmond facilities.
“Their work reflects Bon Secours’ mission to provide compassionate care to those in need,” Joyce says. “The Violence Response Team meets people at one of the most vulnerable moments of their lives.”
In addition to providing medical forensic care, the VRT offers advocacy and emotional support. They also provide safety planning and connections to long-term resources for victims. Joyce believes this response can interrupt the cycle of violence and changes the trajectory of someone’s life.
“It feels fulfilling to be a part of it,” she says. “I feel like I am really doing something to build a stronger community.”
