The first time Yasmin Garcia stepped onto the Bon Secours Richmond Care-A-Van, she was a nervous six-year-old who spoke no English. Yet, she was treated with kindness and compassion in that space thanks to your gift.

“We were very new here, so it was a little scary,” Yasmin says. “But everybody was nice. I only spoke Spanish because I hadn’t started school, but the nurses were very gentle. I felt safe.”

Yasmin’s mother brought her to the Care-A-Van so she could begin her education. She received all her vaccines even though they didn’t have health insurance. The Care-A-Van, supported by your gift to the Bon Secours Richmond Health Care Foundation, has served Richmond's uninsured and underinsured population for over 30 years.

Today, Yasmin is a registered nurse who works on the Care-A-Van. She is committed to providing the same kind of care that she received to other families in need.

“Knowing they don’t have to worry about finding other places to go to... it just makes me feel really happy inside.”

“I love working here. The fulfillment I get seeing patients walk in—knowing they’re scared because they’re brand new to the country—and providing these services, knowing they don’t have to worry about finding other places to go to... it just makes me feel really happy inside,” she says.

“I like knowing that I’m making a difference,” she says. “Maybe some of these kids could one day become doctors or nurses themselves and keep the circle going. I’m grateful that donors make sure we can provide these services for them.”
