Traveling an unknown road can be scary. Having someone who knows the way can make a world of difference. Because of donor gifts, Kenya Hargrove is getting help on her journey to recovery from breast cancer from an oncology nurse navigator.

“When my family and I got the news that I had breast cancer, our nurse navigator was amazing,” Kenya says. “She has been nothing short of a blessing. She gave us time to process the news, and from our very first conversation, she made it clear I was not alone.”

And it wasn’t just Kenya who felt cared for, but her family, too.

“She always made my family feel supported as well,” she says. “She made space for questions, making sure everyone was included.”

Nurse navigators collaborate with the entire team treating patients with complex diseases. They answer questions, make appointments and do follow-up calls. They are members of a hospital care team that are becoming more commonplace thanks to generous Foundation donors.

“Everyone on my team has been wonderful from the start,” Kenya says. “In moments when I was unsure of what to do next, she continued to remind me I had her advocating for me behind the scenes.”

Kenya will be working on her recovery for a while yet. She is so grateful to have a great team in her corner coordinating her care.

“Thank you for making this possible,” says Kenya. “Being diagnosed is scary and overwhelming, but the nurse navigator wrapped me and my family with care. If she hadn’t been available everything would have been so much more difficult.”
