The grant funded a Giraffe Incubator for Mercy Health - Lourdes Hospital

The device, which combines the separate technologies of an incubator and radiant warmer, is an essential feature of the special nursery at Lourdes.

Medical emergencies during pregnancy represent a huge challenge for rural care providers. But thanks to Kosair for Kids, Mercy Health - Lourdes Hospital now has an improved toolkit for those challenges.

In newborn care, infants with special needs are cared for in our “Special Care Nursery,” where infant care is coordinated between a combination of pediatric hospitalists, neonatologists, and neonatal nurse practitioners who are dedicated to the Special Care Nursery and who are supported by the necessary advanced equipment that allows for appropriate care and optimal health outcomes.

The Giraffe OmniBed Carestation, designed by GE Healthcare, combines the separate technologies of an incubator and radiant warmer and is an essential feature of the special nursery at Lourdes. Heat loss in an infant immediately following birth has the potential to result in dangerous reflex responses (excessive oxygen consumption and increased metabolic dysfunction) that can harm the infant.

“This incubator will allow us to keep more babies in our special care nursery. This allows both mom and baby to stay with us and be able to bond while the baby is receiving excellent care,” Jessi Dugan, Nurse Manager, Maternal-Child.

We want to express our gratitude to Kosair for Kids for selecting Mercy Health - Lourdes Hospital.
