You helped Curtis get life-saving emergency care to survive cardiac arrest
Timing is everything. Just ask Curtis Yuskewich, who credits your support of Mercy Health's Anderson Hospital for saving his life.
Curtis, a firefighter and paramedic, was working out at a local gym with plans to go deer hunting afterward. During his workout, Curtis went into cardiac arrest. Luckily two nurses were at the gym and were able to revive him with an automated external defibrillator and CPR. Minutes later the ambulance arrived to transport him to Anderson Hospital’s Emergency Department.
“If it weren’t for donors, I might not be standing here. Their donations do so much to help the Emergency Department, and they did such a fantastic job. I really appreciate those contributions.”
“It was nerve-wracking and scary,” Curtis says. “But I was familiar with the nurses and doctor. I’ve taken many people to that emergency department. Even though I was on the other side as a patient this time, I knew I was in good hands.”
He was immediately taken to the cardiac catheterization lab for stents and then spent a few days in the ICU. Now in cardiac rehab, Curtis is amazed at his good fortune.
“It was a miracle,” he says. “I was in the right place at the right time. I was lucky I was still at the gym and not in a tree in the woods.”
