Twelve-year-old Warren Mrowiec lost his mother Sydney to cancer a year ago. Your gift to support the Bon Secours Hampton Roads Foundation’s KIDZ’NGRIEF pediatric bereavement program and Mikey’s Camp is helping Warren find a path through his grief.

In September, Warren and his dad David started attending KIDZ’NGRIEF meetings. Warren received age-appropriate grief support through art, games, stories, play and other activities. He connected with other children his age who were dealing with the same thing he was.

“I could never say to Warren, ‘I know what it feels like to lose your mother,’” says David. “So, this was a way for him to meet people who do know that feeling.”

When they learned about Mikey’s Camp, David thought it was too late to attend. The annual camp is held each November, and spots fill up quickly. He was grateful to receive word that if Warren wanted to go, there was a spot for him.

“As a parent, you always want to do the best for your children. But a lot of times, we don’t know how to do that. So, having something like Mikey’s Camp, something that can give to a child what a parent can’t, is wonderful. Thank you to the donors who make this possible.”

David will never forget picking his son up from Mikey’s Camp. He saw a happy child surrounded by a dozen new friends. Warren is already planning to attend next year.

“It’s been a hard year,” says David. “But we made it through. And we’re going to make it through another one, and another one after that. And we’re going to keep on going.”
