Donovan is growing a bright and healthy future, thanks to you
Donovan Fletcher was looking for a set of job skills that would not only train him for a career, but also allow him to make a difference in his community. He never imagined he would find his purpose in urban farming.
"It’s cool because now I have something I can teach my daughter because I know more about plants and how to grow things,” Donovan said.
Donovan is a star student in Bon Secours’ Clean & Green program, a workforce development initiative that landscapes vacant lots in West Baltimore and provides environmental education. Eight part-time employees are hired each year and mentored for six months. While learning critical job skills, the team also clears trash and plants trees and lawns in 50-100 lots. For Donovan, it has been an experience like no other.
“I’ve been in other programs like this before, but they used you as cheap labor and pushed you through. Here, the people stay with you and work with you.”
Thanks to Bon Secours Baltimore Foundation donors, the Clean & Green program is able to provide community beautification, workforce development, healthy food access and community gathering spaces. It also helps people like Donovan realize a brighter tomorrow.
“I love it here,” Donovan said. “I don’t know where I’d be without the Clean & Green program. I hope I can one day recommend this program to my kids.”
